Ubiquiti, assessed honestly

UniFi changed what good networking costs. It is also an ecosystem commitment with real limitations, and we say what they are. Everything here is written by people who deploy it — and who deploy other things when UniFi is the wrong answer.

Where UniFi actually wins

The honest case, and the honest limits.

The case for it

  • No licence fees. UniFi Network is free, forever, including multi-site management. Comparable enterprise functionality is a subscription costing more per year than a UniFi access point costs once.
  • The software is good. Topology maps, per-client insight, VLANs, guest portals and firmware management in one place, with a usable mobile app.
  • One ecosystem. Gateway, switching, Wi-Fi, cameras and door access under a single pane of glass genuinely reduces operational load.
  • Price per capability. Nothing else puts a 4x4 Wi-Fi 7 radio and a 2.5 GbE uplink at this price with management included.

The case against

  • It is an ecosystem purchase. Leaving later means replacing the estate, not swapping a component.
  • Support is community-first. There is no enterprise SLA at this price. If you need someone contractually obliged to answer at 2am, budget for a different vendor.
  • Firmware regressions happen. Stay one release behind the newest and read the release notes.
  • RF management is competent, not exceptional. No per-AP spectrum analysis, and automatic channel selection needs constraints set by hand.
  • Stock availability has historically been unpredictable on popular models. Plan lead times into projects.

We recommend non-Ubiquiti hardware wherever it is the better answer — see all product reviews for the full, brand-neutral list.

Which gateway tier do you need?

The most common point of confusion in the UniFi line-up, resolved.

UniFi ExpressFlat or small home

Gateway, controller and one access point in a single unit. Genuinely enough for a one-bedroom flat or a two-person office, and the cheapest way into the ecosystem.

Cloud Gateway Ultra / MaxHouse or small office

A proper gateway running the full UniFi Network controller, with separate access points. This is where most people should start.

Dream Machine Pro / SEBusiness

Rack-mounted gateway with an integrated switch, and on the SE, PoE for your access points. Adds redundancy options and much more routing throughput.

Separate gateway + controllerMulti-site

Once you run several sites, a self-hosted or Cloud Key controller managing many gateways is the architecture that scales. One dashboard, one set of credentials.

📶
Ubiquiti Access Points Prosumer ★★★★½

Ubiquiti UniFi U7 Pro

Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with a 2.5 GbE uplink, running on standard 802.3at power. The access point most small businesses should buy, and the reason is software as much as radio.

Best for: The default Wi-Fi 7 access point for most UniFi builds

📶
Ubiquiti Access Points Enterprise ★★★★½

Ubiquiti UniFi U7 Pro Max

The U7 Pro with a 4x4 6 GHz radio instead of 2x2. Worth the premium where 6 GHz is the primary band and density is high — not otherwise.

Best for: High-density areas where the 6 GHz radio needs to do real work

📶
Ubiquiti Access Points Home ★★★★½

Ubiquiti UniFi U6+

Wi-Fi 6, dual-band, cheap, and entirely adequate for the majority of homes. The access point people should buy more often than they do.

Best for: Homes and small offices where 6 GHz would be wasted

🛡️
Ubiquiti Gateways & Routers Prosumer ★★★★½

Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra

A compact gateway running the full UniFi Network controller with enough routing throughput for a gigabit connection. For most people this is where a UniFi build should start.

Best for: Most homes and small offices — the default UniFi starting point

🛡️
Ubiquiti Gateways & Routers Enterprise ★★★★½

Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro

Rack-mounted gateway with integrated switching, a drive bay for UniFi Protect, and the routing throughput to sit in front of a real business connection.

Best for: Businesses that need rack mounting, higher throughput and camera storage

🛡️
Ubiquiti Gateways & Routers Home ★★★★½

Ubiquiti UniFi Express

Gateway, controller and one Wi-Fi 6 access point in a unit the size of a paperback. Genuinely enough for a small space, and it can run the controller for a larger network later.

Best for: A flat or a two-person office — the cheapest way into UniFi

🔀
Ubiquiti Switches Enterprise ★★★★½

Ubiquiti UniFi Pro Max 24 PoE

Twenty-four PoE ports with multi-gigabit on some of them and a serious power budget. The switch a Wi-Fi 7 deployment actually needs underneath it.

Best for: A floor of Wi-Fi 7 access points with room for cameras
