The Express exists to answer one question: what is the least you can spend to have a real UniFi network? The answer is this, and it is a better answer than it has any right to be.

What you get

A working gateway with proper firewall and VLAN support, the full UniFi Network controller, and a competent Wi-Fi 6 radio — in one small box for roughly the price of a mid-range consumer router that does none of those things properly.

What you will hit

Two Ethernet ports. One is WAN. That leaves one, which means a switch is not optional in any real installation — plan for one from the start.

The controller function handles a small network comfortably and will struggle as the device count climbs. If you expect to grow past a handful of devices, buy a Cloud Gateway instead and keep the Express as a spare or a second-site controller.

Who it is for

A flat, a small terraced house, a two-person office, or an engineer who wants a UniFi lab on a budget. It is also an excellent second unit for a holiday let or a parent's house, managed from the same account.

Key specifications

FunctionGateway + controller + access point
Wi-FiWi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) dual-band, 2x2
Ports1x 1 GbE WAN, 1x 1 GbE LAN
Routing throughputAround 1 Gbps without deep inspection
ControllerRuns UniFi Network for a modest number of devices
PowerUSB-C

What it does well

  • Cheapest possible entry into the UniFi ecosystem
  • Runs the full UniFi Network controller, not a cut-down version
  • Can be repurposed as a controller or access point later
  • Tiny, silent and unobtrusive
  • Setup genuinely takes minutes

Where it disappoints

  • Only two Ethernet ports — you will need a switch almost immediately
  • Wi-Fi 6 only, no 6 GHz
  • Routing throughput limits it on a fast connection with inspection enabled
  • Device capacity for the controller function is modest
  • No PoE output, so access points need injectors or a PoE switch
