Various Wi-Fi Analyser Apps (Free Tools Round-up)
Free Wi-Fi analyser apps answer a surprising proportion of first-line questions. Knowing exactly where they stop is what keeps them useful.
What they answer well
Which channel is each nearby network on. What band and channel width your client actually joined. Whether signal strength is adequate in a given room. How many neighbouring networks compete on your channel.
For a home user or small business that is often enough — usually the answer is "everyone within range is on channel 6" or "the access point is in a cupboard".
What they cannot answer
Non-Wi-Fi interference. Noise floor. Channel utilisation. Why a client disconnected. All of those need either the controller or a spectrum analyser.
Platform notes
Android has the most capable free tools. macOS has genuinely good built-in wireless diagnostics — hold Option and click the Wi-Fi menu. Windows offers a detailed WLAN report from the command line that is often the fastest way to answer "why does this laptop keep dropping". iOS restricts the necessary APIs, so do not judge a tool by its iOS version.
If you run UniFi
The controller gives you channel utilisation and per-client data rates directly, which is more than any free app will tell you. Use it before reaching for a phone app.
Key specifications
| Platforms | iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux |
|---|---|
| Typical capability | SSID and BSSID listing, RSSI, channel, channel width, band |
| Common limits | No spectrum analysis, no packet capture, no noise floor |
| iOS limitation | Apple restricts third-party access to Wi-Fi scanning APIs |
| Cost | Free to around $30 |
What it does well
- Free, instant, and good enough for the most common questions
- Reveals channel overlap and neighbour density immediately
- Useful for verifying which band and channel a client actually joined
- No procurement process required
Where it disappoints
- Cannot see non-Wi-Fi interference at all — the most common hard problem
- Noise floor and channel utilisation unavailable or unreliable on most platforms
- iOS restrictions make proper scanning apps effectively unavailable there
- Measurements vary between devices, so results are not comparable
- Encourages confident conclusions from incomplete data
