We recommend UniFi for most households that will tolerate a small amount of setup. Orbi is here for the households that will not.

Where it genuinely wins over a UniFi build

No controller, no adoption, no VLAN concepts. A non-technical household can set it up and it stays working. That has real value and it is the honest reason to buy it.

Why the third radio matters

A dual-band mesh node uses the same radio for clients and backhaul, roughly halving throughput per hop. Tri-band dedicates a radio to backhaul. In a two-node setup that is often the difference between acceptable and frustrating.

Use wired backhaul if you possibly can

Every tri-band mesh system supports it, and using it converts the system from a mesh into a set of properly connected access points. Even one cable to one satellite transforms performance.

Placement

Place satellites roughly halfway between the router and the problem area, not in the problem area. A node extends whatever signal it receives.

What it does well

  • Dedicated backhaul radio genuinely mitigates the mesh throughput penalty
  • Supports wired backhaul, which converts it into a proper multi-AP system
  • Setup is simpler than UniFi for a non-technical household
  • Widely available with good retail support
  • Consistent single-SSID roaming across nodes

Where it disappoints

  • Expensive relative to one cable and one good access point
  • Coverage claims on the box assume conditions your house does not have
  • Several features sit behind an ongoing security subscription
  • Limited manual RF control — you cannot fix a bad channel plan yourself
  • Wireless backhaul still contends with neighbours
