MikroTik hAP ax³
MikroTik sells capability, not convenience. For the right buyer that is exactly the trade to make.
What you get
Full BGP, OSPF, MPLS, policy routing, a serious firewall, VPN of every description, VLAN handling, container support and a competent Wi-Fi 6 radio set — for the price of a mid-range consumer router.
What it costs you
Time. RouterOS is powerful and unforgiving. The wireless side offers control rather than intelligence: no automatic channel optimisation you would trust, no cloud dashboard.
Who should buy it
Network engineers who want a lab, anyone studying for a routing certification, and small deployments where somebody competent owns the device long-term.
A practical note
Treat the wireless and the routing as separate decisions. Many people run a MikroTik as the router with separate access points for Wi-Fi — often UniFi — which plays to the strengths of both.

What it does well
- Extraordinary feature-per-pound ratio — enterprise routing at consumer pricing
- 2.5 GbE port at this price is rare
- RouterOS gives complete control over every parameter
- Excellent for labs, certification study and homelab routing
- Hardware is well built and runs cool
Where it disappoints
- RouterOS has a genuinely steep learning curve
- Default configuration needs hardening before facing the internet
- Wireless management is manual — no automatic RF optimisation worth the name
- Documentation assumes networking knowledge you may not have yet
- Not a product to hand to a non-technical user
