Cisco enterprise wireless is rarely the cheapest answer and is frequently the right one, for reasons that have little to do with the radios.

The actual argument for it

If you already run Cisco switching and Identity Services Engine, the integration is not a marketing claim — policy, posture, segmentation and troubleshooting genuinely work as one system.

CleanAir deserves specific mention: spectrum analysis built into every access point turns interference troubleshooting from a site visit into a dashboard query. Across a large estate that is worth real money, and it is the single capability UniFi does not have an answer to.

Where UniFi is the better purchase instead

Under about 25 access points, without dedicated network staff, and where community support is acceptable. The gap in capability at that scale does not justify the gap in cost.

Where this is

Multi-hundred access point estates, regulated environments needing a support contract with teeth, and anywhere the existing Cisco investment makes integration the deciding factor.

Do the total cost over the full term at tender stage, licences included. Capital cost per access point is a misleading comparison in both directions.

What it does well

  • Spectrum analysis built into every access point across the estate
  • Deep integration with Cisco switching, ISE and security tooling
  • Enterprise support with genuine escalation paths
  • Flexible Radio Assignment adapts radio roles to conditions
  • Well understood by a large pool of engineers, which lowers hiring risk

Where it disappoints

  • Total cost of ownership is high once licensing is included
  • Licensing model is complex and changes; budget carefully over the term
  • Requires 802.3bt for full functionality
  • Configuration complexity is real; not a platform for an unstaffed network
  • Overkill for anything under roughly 25 access points
