Various Multi-Gigabit PoE++ Switching (Buying Guide)
Buying Wi-Fi 7 access points without checking the switching is the most expensive avoidable mistake in a wireless refresh, so this entry is a checklist rather than a product.
The four checks
1. Uplink speed. A Wi-Fi 7 access point on a 1 GbE port cannot deliver Wi-Fi 7. 2.5 GbE minimum.
2. Power standard. Tri-radio Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points commonly need 802.3bt for full functionality. On 802.3at they boot, appear healthy, and quietly disable a radio or reduce the uplink speed.
3. Total PoE budget. A 48-port 802.3bt switch rarely supplies 60 W on every port at once. Sum every connected device at its full-functionality draw.
4. Cabling. Cat6A for new installations. Re-pulling cable in an occupied building costs many times the price of the cable.
If you are buying UniFi
The Pro Max line is the range to look at. Check which variant you are buying — the mix of 1 GbE and 2.5 GbE ports differs between models and the datasheet is the only reliable guide.
Budget guidance
For a wireless refresh, expect switching and any recabling to be a comparable line item to the access points themselves — sometimes larger.
Key specifications
| Uplink to AP | 2.5 GbE minimum, 5 or 10 GbE for high density |
|---|---|
| PoE standard | 802.3bt (Type 3, 60 W) for tri-radio Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs |
| Total PoE budget | Sum of full-functionality AP power, not minimum |
| Cabling | Cat6A recommended for new installs |
What it does well
- Multi-gigabit uplinks remove the bottleneck new APs would otherwise hit
- 802.3bt ensures every radio and the full uplink speed are enabled
- Cat6A plus multigig gives headroom for the next refresh
- Modern switches expose per-port PoE draw, making commissioning verifiable
Where it disappoints
- Frequently omitted from wireless project budgets
- Total PoE budget is often far below port count times maximum power
- Higher power draw and heat may require a comms room cooling review
- Multi-gigabit copper is more sensitive to cable quality than 1 GbE
