Ubiquiti UniFi Protect G5 Bullet
Cameras are where the UniFi ecosystem argument is at its strongest, because the alternative is usually a subscription.
The system, not the camera
A camera on its own does nothing. You need a console with storage — a Dream Machine Pro or SE with a drive, or a dedicated Network Video Recorder. Budget for that first; it is the larger cost.
The two things people get wrong
Storage. Retention is a function of camera count, resolution, frame rate and how much motion there is. Estimate generously, then add. Running out of retention is discovered at exactly the wrong moment.
PoE budget. Each camera is another powered device on a switch that is probably already carrying access points. This is the most common reason a UniFi switch runs out of budget, and the failure shows up as an access point that will not power on.
Where this is not the right purchase
Anywhere with a regulatory or insurance specification for the security system. This is good prosumer and small-business kit, not a specified security installation, and it should not be sold as one.

What it does well
- No subscription — footage records to hardware you own
- Same management interface as the rest of the UniFi estate
- Genuinely good night performance for the price
- Straightforward PoE installation, one cable per camera
- Local recording means no cloud dependency for playback
Where it disappoints
- Requires a UniFi console with a drive — a camera alone is not a system
- Adds meaningfully to your PoE budget and switch port count
- Storage sizing is frequently underestimated
- Not a replacement for a specified security system in a regulated environment
- Analytics are competent, not best in class
