Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro
The Dream Machine Pro is the point in the UniFi range where the product starts behaving like business equipment rather than very good consumer equipment.
What the step up buys
Rack mounting, 10 gigabit uplinks, real routing throughput with inspection enabled, and a drive bay that turns it into a camera recorder. If you are running UniFi Protect at any scale, this or the SE is where that becomes practical.
The PoE question
The Pro has no PoE on its switch ports. The SE variant does, and for most businesses buying at this tier the SE is the better purchase — it removes the need for a separate PoE switch in a small installation and the price difference is modest against the cost of adding one.
If you already have PoE switching, the Pro is the sensible choice.
What to check first
Fan noise is real. This belongs in a comms room or a rack with a door, not under a desk. And there is one power supply — if the site cannot tolerate an outage, plan for a UPS and a spare unit rather than expecting redundancy from the box.
Key specifications
| Function | Gateway + controller + 8-port switch |
|---|---|
| Ports | 8x 1 GbE LAN, 1x 1 GbE WAN, 1x 10G SFP+ WAN, 1x 10G SFP+ LAN |
| Storage | 1x 3.5" HDD bay for UniFi Protect |
| Form | 1U rack mount |
| Controller | UniFi Network, Protect, Access, Talk |
What it does well
- Rack mountable with a proper front display
- 10G SFP+ on both WAN and LAN
- Drive bay makes it a viable UniFi Protect recorder
- Substantially higher routing and IPS throughput than the compact gateways
- Runs the whole UniFi application suite
Where it disappoints
- Integrated switch ports are 1 GbE only — the 10G is SFP+ only
- No PoE on the integrated switch ports (the SE variant adds it)
- Audible fan noise; not suitable for an office cupboard next to a desk
- Single power supply, no redundancy
- Overkill for a site under roughly 25 devices
