Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra
If someone asks where to start with UniFi and gives no other information, this is the answer.
The reasoning
It runs the complete UniFi Network controller — the same software that manages a multi-site estate — at a price that used to buy a consumer router. It routes a gigabit connection with intrusion detection on. It has four LAN ports, which is enough for a small build before you add a switch.
Separating the gateway from the access points is also the architecturally correct choice: you place access points where the RF needs them, not where the broadband comes in.
Where to step up
Move to a Dream Machine Pro or SE when you need rack mounting, integrated switching with PoE, higher routing throughput, or the ability to run UniFi Protect with meaningful camera storage.
Move to a self-hosted controller when you run more than one site.
Practical note
Budget for a PoE switch in the same purchase. The Ultra has no PoE output, and powering access points with individual injectors is a false economy that becomes obvious at the third one.
Key specifications
| Function | Gateway + controller (no integrated Wi-Fi) |
|---|---|
| Ports | 1x 1 GbE WAN, 4x 1 GbE LAN |
| IPS/IDS throughput | Around 1 Gbps |
| Device support | Comfortable for a small-to-medium site |
| Controller | Full UniFi Network |
| Power | External DC |
What it does well
- Full UniFi Network controller at a very low price
- Four LAN ports, so a small build needs no separate switch immediately
- Handles a gigabit connection with intrusion detection enabled
- Fanless and silent
- The right default for the majority of UniFi builds
Where it disappoints
- No integrated Wi-Fi — access points are a separate purchase
- No PoE output, so you need a PoE switch or injectors
- 1 GbE ports only; a multi-gigabit connection will bottleneck
- Not rack-mountable without a third-party tray
- No redundant power option
